Quick verdict

MacWhisper is our first choice for a local transcription workflow whose optional cloud paths are explicitly documented: default transcription and speaker identification run locally after model download. Buzz is the alternative for offline audio/video transcription on Mac, Windows or Linux with text and subtitle exports. Aiko suits an Apple-device workflow with a one-time purchase, but has no in-app text editing or built-in batch transcription. These scores concern documented workflow boundaries, not model accuracy or speed.

MacWhisper

Best overall · A local default with explicitly documented optional cloud paths
89

MacWhisper documents local default transcription and speaker identification on Mac/iOS after downloading a Whisper or Parakeet model.

StrengthIts guide distinguishes cloud audio transcription from transcript-text services, and lists local Ollama or LM Studio alternatives for AI prompts.
CautionSelecting Groq, ElevenLabs or Deepgram sends audio to a cloud service. DeepL translation and external AI prompts send transcript text; default local transcription does not make every feature offline.

Skip it if: You need every optional feature to stay local without checking its configuration.

Buzz

Offline desktop transcription with text and subtitle exports
88

Buzz documents offline audio/video transcription and translation on Mac, Windows and Linux, with TXT, SRT and VTT exports.

StrengthThe documented model choices include Whisper variants and Parakeet, with additional ASR options; the workflow is not limited to a single Apple platform.
CautionWhisper API is an optional cloud path. Choose a documented offline route when local inference is required; model availability does not establish performance on your hardware.

Skip it if: You intend to use Whisper API while requiring the audio to remain local.

Aiko

Single-file local transcription on a supported Apple device

Aiko runs Whisper locally, using large-v2 on macOS and medium or small on iOS depending on memory. The vendor lists 100 languages.

StrengthThe product page specifies file and export boundaries: supported OS media formats include M4A, WAV, MP3, MP4 and MOV; exports include SRT, JSON and CSV.
CautionOGG is unsupported. There is no in-app text editing or built-in batch transcription; check current device and OS eligibility before buying.

Find where speech becomes text

MacWhisper leads for its explicit boundary between default local processing and optional external services. Buzz is close behind for its offline desktop workflow and subtitle outputs. Aiko is a defined single-file option for eligible Apple devices, with clearer purchase terms but material editing limits.

Local capture and local inference are different. A desktop can capture audio and still send it elsewhere for transcription. Our bot-free meeting guide addresses capture without a participant bot. The question here is where the speech model executes after the audio exists.

MacWhisper documents default transcription and speaker identification locally on Mac/iOS after a model download. Buzz explicitly documents offline audio/video processing. Aiko runs Whisper locally, with different model choices on macOS and iOS. These are documented execution paths, not promises that every model performs equally on every device.

Check optional services separately

In MacWhisper, cloud transcription providers Groq, ElevenLabs and Deepgram receive audio. DeepL translation and external AI prompts receive transcript text. A workflow can therefore transcribe locally and still send the resulting words to another service afterwards. Check both stages when deciding whether the full task meets your requirement.

MacWhisper also lists Ollama and LM Studio as local alternatives for AI prompts. Those are post-processing options, not a claim that they replace its documented speech models. Buzz likewise distinguishes offline processing from its optional Whisper API cloud path. Selecting an API route is a different execution choice from selecting a locally running model.

Where a model download is required, prepare it before relying on offline use. Inspect the selected processing route with a short representative file before beginning a large job. We did not measure network behavior or benchmark any model.

Choose the file and the next editor

Buzz documents TXT, SRT and VTT export, useful when the transcript must continue as plain text or captions. Aiko lists SRT, JSON and CSV. Its lack of in-app text editing means corrections need another appropriate editor after export; its lack of built-in batch transcription matters for an archive of recordings.

Aiko accepts OS-supported media formats including M4A, WAV, MP3, MP4 and MOV, but not OGG. Keep the original when preparing a supported copy. Check the current device/OS requirements on its product page rather than assuming every Mac or phone is eligible.

Language count is another boundary. Aiko's vendor-listed 100 languages does not establish uniform transcription quality across them. Review a sample in the language and recording conditions you actually use. For a multi-speaker episode, the podcast transcription comparison separates speaker labels, channel preparation and editorial handoff.

A purchase decision should include the work after transcription. If you need frequent corrections or many files at once, Aiko's explicit editing and batch limits may outweigh its one-time price. Buzz's cross-platform exports and MacWhisper's documented local/cloud separation answer different workflow requirements.

How these scores were assigned

Local inference receives 40%, workflow breadth 25%, cloud-path transparency 25%, and buying clarity 10%. Scores reflect documented fit. We did not compare recognition accuracy, generation speed or hardware efficiency. MacWhisper's explicit optional-service boundaries narrowly put it first; choose Buzz ahead of it when Windows/Linux support or caption-file export is the deciding requirement.

For recurring calls rather than existing recordings, the meeting note-taker comparison covers capture and retention. If reviewed transcript material becomes a deck, the document-to-presentation guide addresses what happens to its structure and qualifications during summarization.

Frequently asked questions

Are all MacWhisper features local?

No. Default transcription and speaker identification are documented as local, but optional cloud transcription sends audio and external translation/AI prompts send transcript text. Check the selected services separately.

Is Buzz's Whisper API option an offline model?

No. It is the optional cloud route. Use a documented offline processing path when the task requires local inference.

Can I edit or batch-transcribe inside Aiko?

The product page says there is no in-app text editing or built-in batch transcription. Plan a separate correction step using an appropriate export, and choose a different workflow when batching is essential.

Does Buzz's MIT license mean every packaged app is free?

No. It establishes MIT-licensed open-source code, not a universal price for store binaries. Consult the official repository for distribution and check the price of the package you intend to obtain.

How this ranking was made

We compared the named published sources listed below, including product information and pricing. Third-party reviews inform a comparison only when cited. Scores follow the weighted criteria above. These are source-based comparisons, without hands-on testing or lab benchmarks, and no vendor paid for a position. New evidence can change a tool's score or position; Buzz ranks second under this article's criteria.
